Hundreds of Christians gathered recently in front of the United States Capitol building on a cold and rainy day.

They began a public reading of their holy book, the Bible.

They kept reading for 90 hours.

The event is called the U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon. It marks the National Day of Prayer and has been taking place for 27 years.

Pastor Jeffrey Light of NOVUM Baptist Church in Reva, Virginia spoke to VOA about the event. He said its goal is to show the importance of religion in American life.

"It"s foundational for who we are as human beings to know our purpose, and our purpose comes from our creator," Light said.

Few know the part of religion in America better than Alan Cooperman. He leads study of the subject for the Washington-based Pew Research Center.

The center did two major studies on religion in the U.S. in 2007 and 2014. The research found that the American public is growing less religious.

"The percentage of Americans who say they believe in God has dropped a little," Cooperman told VOA. He explained that the percentage of Americans who say they pray daily has dropped, along with the percentage who say they go to religious services at least once a month.

Cooperman said the share of Americans who do not identify with any religion has been rising very quickly.

In his words, "It"s gone from 7 percent in 2000, 16 percent in 2007, to 23 percent overall today."

Cooperman believes the drop in religious involvement reflects a generational change. Young Americans are growing into adulthood with looser ties to religion. The children of today are also less involved in religious activities than the children of past generations.

  Religion and politics

But lawmakers and government officials are more likely to be religious than the general public. Organized faith appears to still play an important part in U.S. politics.

More than 90 percent of the United States Congress is Christian compared to 70 percent of the general public. At a recent Senate discussion, members of Congress talked about how they balance faith and politics.

Senator James Lankford is a Republican from Oklahoma. He told VOA that faith is "the lens" he looks through.

He added, "If it"s a faith, it affects everything."

Many religions are represented in Congress. Along with Christian legislators are Muslims, Hindus and Jews. There are also some atheist lawmakers.

  ‘Overwhelmingly religious"

For Cooperman, even the increasing number non-religious Americans may not be enough to change the role of faith in American life and politics.

"...the American public remains overwhelmingly religious," he said. In his words, "It"s a very religious country. Three quarters of Americans, about 77 percent of the population, still identify with a religious group."

Pastor Jeffrey Light agrees. He said the role of religion will continue to play an important part in this year"s presidential election.

"For me and those that are seekers of the word of God," he said, "we will certainly seek a leader who honors God."

North Korea has named Ri Yong Ho its new foreign minister, according to a diplomatic letter sent to Britain.

North Korea"s embassy in London informed the British government about the appointment.

The diplomatic letter did not say what would happen to the current foreign minister, Ri Su Yong. But South Korea"s spy agency said it believes he was named vice chairman for international affairs of the ruling Workers" Party.

Ri Yong Ho is a career diplomat. The former vice foreign minister served as North Korea"s top negotiator in past nuclear disarmament talks with United States and South Korean representatives. He once served as ambassador to Britain.

Some *ysts say Ri"s appointment may be an attempt by the isolated nation to re-start diplomacy with other countries.

International tensions increased this year when North Korea carried out a nuclear test in January and launched a long-range rocket a month later.

The United Nations Security Council ordered strict sanctions on North Korea for carrying out those tests. The U.N. has also condemned the country"s human rights record.

Observers say the North Korean government may ask Ri to plead his country"s case to the U.N.

Lee Ji-sue is a North Korean expert at Myongji University in South Korea. He says no major policy changes are expected under the new foreign minister.

Lee noted that the former foreign minister took orders from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and his predecessor and father, Kim Jong Il. "Ri Yong Ho won"t have much say in foreign policies," Lee said.

1.Q: What does the woman mean?

  A. The next bus is coming soon.

  B. The bus will wait a few minutes at the stop.

  C. There are only two or three passengers waiting for the bus.

  D. They can catch this bus without running.

2.Q: What do we learn about the woman from the conversation?

  A. The assignment looks easy but actually it"s quite difficult.

  B. The assignment is too difficult for them to complete on time.

  C. They can"t finish the assignment until Thursday.

  D. They have plenty of time to work on the assignment.

  1.M: Hurry, there"s a bus coming.

W: Why run? There will be another one in two or three minutes.

2.M: Wow, that"s a big assignment we"ve got for the English class.

W: Well, it"s not as bad as it looks. It isn"t due until Thursday morning.

Why do sth. B,C均与对话内容无关;D项错在this,应该是the next。

  2. D 关键在于听懂比较结构not as bad as it looks"不想看上去那么糟"以及not due until"直到......才到期"。说明作业不难,而且时间充裕,因此选D。A正好把难度颠倒;B中的too difficult也不对;作业的上缴日期截止到星期四,但这并不等于C“他们直到截止日才能完成”,故C不正确。

  听力题目:

11.Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

  A. They are both anxious to try Italian food.

  B. They are likely to have dinner together.

  C. The man will treat the woman to dinner tonight.

  D. The woman refused to have dinner with the man.

  12. Q: What do we learn about the house from the conversation?

  A. It"s only for rent,not for sale.

  B. It"s not as good as advertised.

  C. It"s being redecorated.

  D. It"s no longer available.

11.M: Mary, would you join me for dinner tonight?

W: You treated me last weekend. Now it"s my turn. Shall we try something Italian?

  12. W: Good afternoon. I"m calling to inquire about the four-bedroom house you advertised in the newspaper.

M:I"m sorry, but it"s already sold.

Detroit Government Retirees Struggle to Keep Benefits

Don Taylor spent 26 years of his life as a police officer in Detroit, the city where he was born and raised. It was a dangerous job, but one he is fond of.

It also provided a dependable paycheck, as well as a guaranteed pension and health care coverage in retirement. Or so he thought. “There’s a dis* on the pensions, you know," he said.

“Borrowing a billion dollars to fund your pension, yes the pension is funded, but now it’s done through more debt," said Eric Scorsone of Michigan State University. He is on the team helping the city of Detroit emerge from its fiscal crisis.

“It’s probably as bad as any city has ever seen in terms of a fiscal crisis. My part is to work on tax and revenue forecasting and tax issues in general for the city as they work on a plan to move forward," he said.

The plan includes figuring out how to pay for retirement pensions funded with borrowed money, and how to pay for health care plans for current and retired public sector employees.

“The city really should be paying hundreds of millions of dollars more than it is right now, but there’s no money to do it, so the question is how do you fund that liability or do you reduce the liability by reducing benefits," said Scorsone.

Taylor says the pensions and health care plans of retirees are already modest.

“There are a lot of misconceptions too that in the city of Detroit, that the people’s benefits are “Cadillac” plans, and they’re overpaid, where the average pension is only $30,000," he said.

“I cannot believe that they could do any more cutting," said retired Detroit police officer Greg Trozak, who has two sons on the police force. While he is concerned about cuts to his own benefits, he is more worried about future benefits.

“I’m sure the active people are going to be hurting a lot more than a lot of us retirees are," he said.

“The elected officials in the city of Detroit should have seen this reduction in revenue coming, and should have seen that the population was declining years ago and should have adjusted for that, but they failed to do so. Now it’s resting on the backs of the employees and retirees," said Taylor.

The clock is ticking to turn Detroit’s finances around. Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has less than eighteen months to make difficult decisions that would bring about the Motor City’s eventual solvency.

The American space agency and private companies are developing vehicles to take humans into low Earth orbit and even farther into space.

A space vehicle system called Crew Space Transportation is a part of the effort. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, says its CST-100 Starliner will start flying human crews to the International Space Station by the end of next year.

The United States no longer uses its reusable space shuttle to send astronauts into space. The last shuttle flight took place in 2011. Since then, the U.S. space agency has depended on Russian spacecraft to launch crews to the International Space Station.

Boeing and another company, Space X, say they can fly astronauts to low orbits for about $20 million less than the current Russian spacecraft, Soyuz.

Astronauts are already training for commercial spacecraft missions in flight simulators. Vehicle designs and controls have changed since the early days of spaceflight. In the future, astronauts will fly with the help of com*r screens that are sensitive to touch.

Eric Boe is an astronaut with NASA.

"You know, it is like learning how to drive a car, except for now you are learning how to drive a spaceship."

The space agency is using a number of flight simulators. The machinery was developed to help astronauts understand the design of a spacecraft"s cockpit.

The agency, better known as NASA, is developing its new Orion spacecraft and a more powerful rocket, called Space Launch System.

In the future, NASA officials want to let private companies take the lead in low orbit flights. By doing so, they want the space agency to direct its attention on deep space flights, such as the first manned flight to Mars.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the following question. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

Some people prefer to live in a small town while others prefer to live in a big city. Where do you prefer to live and why?

  I Love Big Cities

I grew up in a small town and now study in a big city, so I have experi-enced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like to livein a big city, but I was wrong. After two years of living in one, I can"t imagineever living in a small town again.

I love the excitement of big cities. Small towns have a slower pace. Inlarge cities you have to adapt to a variety of situations, like finding a new routeto work or trying a new restaurant. I enjoy that challenge very much. Anotherpart of the excitement of city life is the variety of cultural activities available.

There are various kinds of theatres, musicals and dance performances availablein big cities. These things are rare in small ones.

Of course, security is a concern, and that"s one area where small towns aresuperior to big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more cautious and live in alarge city than feel secure but bored in a small town.

  22. A) It was about a little animal.

  B) It took her six years to write.

  C) It was adapted from a fairy tale.

  D) It was about a little girl and her pet.

  23. A) She knows how to write best-selling novels.

  B) She can earn a lot of money by writing for adults.

  C) She is able to win enough support from publishers.

  D) She can make a living by doing what she likes.

  24. A) The characters. B) The readers.C) Her ideas. D) Her life experiences.

  25. A) She doesn"t really know where they originated.

  B) She mainly drew on stories of ancient saints.

  C) They popped out of her child-hood dreams.

  D) They grew out of her long hours of thinking.

  23. A) She is thirsty for promotion.

  B) She wants a much higher salary.

  C) She is tired of her present work.

  D) She wants to save travel expenses.

I"m fed up with my job.", 正是"tired of"的同义置换。

From the Qin Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty, the Chinese government divided Chinese people into four classes:landlord, peasant, craftsman and merchant.Landlords and peasants constituted the two major classes, while merchants and craftsmen were collected into the two minor ones.Theoretically, except for the position of the Emperor, nothing was hereditary. There was a partial restoration of feudalism when eminent families with large amounts of land and huge number of semi-serfs emerged. These families dominated important civilian and military positions of the government, making the positions available to members of their own families and clans.Since the Tang dynasty, the government reformed the imperial examination system as an attempt to root out this phenomenon.
